Cash, cards and ATMs — how it actually works here

Taghazout village has a small number of ATMs along the main road, and they can run empty on busy weekends — Aourir (10 minutes) and Agadir have full bank branches. Moroccan ATMs typically add their own fixed fee of roughly 30–40 MAD per withdrawal on top of whatever your bank charges, so fewer, larger withdrawals beat many small ones.

Cards work in the bigger cafés, surf shops and hotels. Souks, taxis, small food places and most day-to-day village life run on cash — keep small notes (20s and 50s) for taxis and street food, because breaking a 200 MAD note is a daily sport.

The dirham is a closed currency: you change money inside Morocco (airport bureaus and banks are both fine), and you cannot legally take meaningful amounts of MAD out. Keep your exchange receipts if you want to convert leftover dirhams back before flying home.

Frequently asked questions

Can I pay in euros in Taghazout?

Day to day, no — Morocco runs on dirhams, and the few tourist businesses that accept euros do it at a poor rate. The clean split most guests use: anything bookable is paid by card in euros once it is confirmed (our deposits work that way), and cash in dirhams covers food, taxis and the souk.

How much cash do I need for a surf week?

If lessons, boards and day trips are arranged online in advance, most guests get through a week on roughly 150–250 MAD per day for food, taxis and extras — a tajine dinner is a few euros, village taxi hops cost pocket change. Carry a week’s worth in two ATM withdrawals rather than five to save on fees.

Are there ATMs in Taghazout?

Yes — a handful in the village along the main road, with full bank branches in Aourir (10 minutes) and Agadir. They occasionally run dry on busy weekends, and most add a fixed local fee of roughly 30–40 MAD per withdrawal, so plan fewer, larger withdrawals.

What is the euro to dirham rate today?

Right now 1 € ≈ 10.86 MAD at the daily bank reference rate — the converter on this page uses the same feed, refreshed every day. Bureau and card rates will sit slightly either side of it.
