How to read a comparison, and what actually decides the session
Four numbers decide most sessions, and they do not carry equal weight. Swell height tells you how big, but period tells you how good: long-period swell arrives with more power behind each wave and breaks further out, while a short period is wind chop dressed up as surf. Wind direction matters more than wind speed - offshore holds a wave face up and clean, onshore crumbles it. Tide decides whether a given spot works at all, and that is per spot rather than a general rule. Level comes last but overrides everything: a beach break with slow, sloping waves is where a first week belongs, and a point break that peels off a headland gives long rides to surfers who can already paddle into them.
