Surf season and spot planning

Beginner surf planning

Use this page to connect month, swell, wind, tide, skill level and location area before choosing lessons, free surf or a mixed surf-and-recovery week.

Read conditions by level

Beginners need safer sand-bottom sessions. Intermediates need push without crowd pressure. Advanced surfers can watch reef and point windows only when tide and wind line up.

Use the right order

Check forecast first, compare surf spots second, then choose the stay and lesson rhythm.

Keep a backup day

When surf is flat, windy or too strong, use yoga, recovery, food stops, Agadir errands or a protected beginner beach.

Month by month, roughly

October to March is the reliable window: consistent north-west swell, offshore mornings and a 4/3 wetsuit from December. April to June runs smaller and friendlier, which suits a first surf week. July and August are the flattest and hottest months — good for learning, frustrating if you came for the points.

Tide and crowd windows

The points work on the push and through high tide, which is exactly when everyone paddles out. A dawn session before the schools arrive, or a late afternoon on the drop, usually buys twice the waves in the same conditions.

Beaches or points

Panorama, Banana and Devil's Rock hold beginner and intermediate sessions on most swells. Anchor Point, Killer Point and Boilers need size, a working tide and enough paddle fitness to hold position. Read the swell period and not only the height: 14s at 1.5m is a completely different wave from 8s at 2m.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Picking the famous spot before checking level
  • Treating every winter swell as safe
  • Ignoring wind and tide because swell looks good
