What kind of wave is Hash Point?
Hash Point is a right-hand point break over sand with rock underneath. Hash Point needs a swell from W–NNW (270°–330°) at 0.6–1.5 m and 8–14 s to switch on. The wind decides as much as the swell: Hash Point holds its shape from the NE–SE sector (50°–135°) and goes ragged once it swings onshore. Hash Point breaks directly below the village dunes, which is why the first surf travellers here walked to it instead of making the trek up to Anchor Point.
What tide does Hash Point work on?
Hash Point works best from mid to high tide. Hash Point will give you a wave at any tide, but the shape tightens up as the water fills in. You can enter Hash Point off the sand or off the rocks depending on where the bank has moved.
Who should surf Hash Point, and how busy is it?
Hash Point suits beginners and intermediates. Hash Point is busy most mornings because the surf schools work here, so the early session is the calm one. At Hash Point the things to watch are rock zones on the inside. If Hash Point is too big, too crowded or simply wrong on the day, Panorama Point is the nearest useful swap, and a guided session from our own desk puts a local in the water with you rather than sending you out cold.

Hash surf forecast — quick questions
Can a beginner surf Hash Point?
On a small, clean day yes, but with a caveat: Hash Point breaks over sand with rock underneath, so a beginner belongs on the inside and nowhere near the top of the peak. With any size in it, Panorama Point is the honest answer.
How cold is the water at Hash Point, and what wetsuit do I need?
The sea off Hash Point runs about 17–19 °C from December to March and 21–23 °C in late summer. That is the figure for this whole stretch of coast rather than a reading taken at the spot, so plan on a 4/3 mm wetsuit in winter and a 3/2 mm or a springsuit in September. Today's measured sea temperature is in the live board above this guide.
