What kind of wave is Boilers?
Boilers is a right-hand point break over a reef carpeted with sea urchins and sharp rock. When it lines up, a ride at Boilers runs about 300 to 400 metres. Boilers needs a swell from W–NNW (275°–345°) at 1.3–3.2 m and 11–19 s to switch on. The wind decides as much as the swell: Boilers holds its shape from the NE–SE sector (55°–145°) and goes ragged once it swings onshore. Boilers takes its name from the rusted ship's boiler still sitting on the rocks at the take-off, and the point sits in a wind channel that stays clean when everything south of it has gone onshore.
What tide does Boilers work on?
Boilers breaks at both ends of the tide and goes slack in the middle. Boilers breaks at both ends of the tide, but on a small swell the reef is close enough to the surface that the wave stops being worth the risk. Getting in and out of Boilers is a timed jump off the rocks, and that is the part that hurts people here, not the wave.
Who should surf Boilers, and how busy is it?
Boilers suits advanced surfers. Boilers rarely draws a crowd, and on a weekday you may share it with nobody. At Boilers the things to watch are sea urchins across the reef, sharp rock at the entry, a current that runs along the point and how far it is from help. If Boilers is too big, too crowded or simply wrong on the day, Tamri is the nearest useful swap, and a guided session from our own desk puts a local in the water with you rather than sending you out cold.

Boilers surf forecast — quick questions
Can a beginner surf Boilers?
No. Boilers is not a first-week wave, and what rules it out is sea urchins across the reef. Panorama Point is where a beginner should be instead.
How cold is the water at Boilers, and what wetsuit do I need?
The sea off Boilers runs about 17–19 °C from December to March and 21–23 °C in late summer. That is the figure for this whole stretch of coast rather than a reading taken at the spot, so plan on a 4/3 mm wetsuit in winter and a 3/2 mm or a springsuit in September. Today's measured sea temperature is in the live board above this guide.
